The Solar Walk is an outside activity, it lasts about 1 hour and 15 minutes and is a walk through a scaled model of our solar system. Instead of th 6 Billion kilometres from the Sun to the Trans-Neptunian Dwarf Planets (first one being the former planet Pluto) it is a mere 730 metres. The walk is most suited to Key Stage 2 classes, but is equally valid for KS3 and KS4, or indeed any casual visitor. The activity can be led by a member of staff or self-led by a teacher/group leader - a charge is made for the led version of the activity (for prices please see education visits).
Planets are spaced at the correct distance for this scaled down model of the solar system and models are used, scaled to the correct size, to represent the planets. The activity re-inforces much of the material learnt in a KS2 star show, but with lots more information and gives children a real appreciation of the huge scale of our tiny corner of the Universe. A solar walk passport can be downloaded from our site prior to visits and printed out for children to answer questions, which is particularly useful for self-led activities.
Copies of our solar walk markers are also available for teachers to download either before or after visits for use on the day or in the classroom. In addition, the information on the size and scale of our solar walk in available to download here, in order to reproduce or re-scale in the classroom environment. Lastly, you can download a pamphlet on the Solar Walk by clicking here.
